and Bob Spence, County Legislators

Body
WHEREAS, it was with a deep sense of personal loss that the Legislature learned of the sudden death of Sheriff James D. Anderson on July 24, 2000; and,

WHEREAS, Jim was born in Maryville, Missouri, in 1941, the son Earl M. and Beryl Frances Anderson; and,

WHEREAS, Jim was born to a career in law enforcement, as his father was the elected sheriff of Nodaway County; and,

WHEREAS, Sheriff Earl Anderson also tragically died in office; and,

WHEREAS, Jim began his career in 1962 when he joined the Missouri State Highway Patrol; and,

WHEREAS, in 1968, Jim was appointed undersheriff by Jackson County Sheriff Kenneth Carnes, thus beginning a distinguished 32-year tenure with the Sheriff's Department; and,
WHEREAS, while with the department, Jim attended the Federal Bureau of Investigation's National Academy and the National Sheriff's Institute; and,

WHEREAS, upon the death of Sheriff Robert Rennau in 1991, Jim was appointed sheriff by County Executive Marsha Murphy; and,

WHEREAS, Jim was elected sheriff in his own right in 1992 and again in 1996; and,

WHEREAS, Jim was a member of the National and Missouri Sheriff's Associations and had recently hosted the annual meeting of the national association in Kansas City; and,

WHEREAS, he was also a member of the executive boards of the Western Missouri Regional Law Enforcement Academy, the Eastern Jackson County Drug Task Force, and the Eastern Jackson County Youth Court; and,
