WHEREAS, each year the American Sons of Columbus honors a woman of Italian descent who personifies characteristics which reflect a strong citizenship and pride and love for her heritage; and,
WHEREAS, the 1999 recipient of the Columbian of the Year award is Mary Lou Smith, a woman whose character notably displays an appreciation for her Italian heritage; and,
WHEREAS, Mary Lou has diligently devoted countless hours of time to public service in Jackson County; and,
WHEREAS, Mary Lou served as a Jackson County legislator from the 5th District from 1989 to 1994, acting as the first female chair of the Legislature's Public Works Committee; and,
WHEREAS, she also served in a variety of other positions including that of administrative assistant to Bill Waris and legislative assistant to Fred Arbanas; and,
WHEREAS, Mary Lou currently serves as the compliance review officer for Jackson County; and,
WHEREAS, Mary Lou also serves as a member of the Merchants Bank Board, Sister Cities Board, and Park Lane Medical Center Board, and she provides volunteer services for the Sunshine Center and Jackson County Adults with Disabilities; and,
WHEREAS, Mary Lou was honored at a formal gala on October 10, 1999, at the Marriott-Downtown Hotel in Kansas City; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislators of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature congratulates Mary Lou Smith upon her selection as "Columbian of the Year" by the American Sons of Columbus.
