Body
WHEREAS, the first midwest regional conference of the American Association of Blacks in Energy (AABE) will be held July 18-20, 2001, at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Kansas City; and,

WHEREAS, the AABE is a national association of energy policymaking professionals dedicated to ensuring the input of African-Americans and other minorities in the discussion and development of energy policies, regulation, research and development technologies, and environmental issues; and,

WHEREAS, the AABE was founded in 1977 by its first chairman, Clarke Watson, and a small group of black leaders in the energy industry; and,

WHEREAS, in November 1977, the AABE was invited to participate in the NAACP conference in Washington D.C. , to examine the "energy crisis" and its implications for African Americans; and,

WHEREAS, as a result of the conference, AABE members were invited to work with NAACP policy advisors to develop and issue a formal statement concerning national energy policies; and,

WHEREAS, the NAACP board, at its annual meeting on January 8, 1978, adopted a policy statement which addressed the potential adverse consequences to African Americans by the government's proposals; and,

WHEREAS, the mission of the AABE is carried out through programs and activities in three discreet areas: Career and Professional Development, Information Dissemination, and Networking Events; and,

WHEREAS, membership in the AABE is open to energy professionals whose training or experience in energy related fields could make significant contributions to resolving energy problems and create a better understanding of energy issues; and,
