Body
WHEREAS, the Legislature welcomes the Honorable Dennis W. Archer, who will be featured as Keynote Speaker for the 5th Annual Judge Kit Carson Roque, Jr., Scholarship Banquet to be held on October 25, 2002 at the Westin Crown Center Hotel; and,

WHEREAS President-elect Archer, an African-American, is the first person of color elected to the highest office of the American Bar Association; and,

WHEREAS, he will become president of the association in August 2003 during the ABA's annual meeting in San Francisco; and,

WHEREAS, he served two four-year terms as mayor of the city of Detroit (1994-2001), and during his last year in office served as the president of the National League of Cities; and,

WHEREAS, he sits on the corporate boards of Johnson Controls, Inc., Compuware Corporation, and Covisiant; and,

WHEREAS, in 1970 he earned his Juris Doctorate from Detroit College of Law, now Michigan State University Detroit College of Law, and began practicing thereafter as a trial lawyer in a succession of Detroit law firms; and,

WHEREAS, he served as associate professor at the Detroit College of Law, adjunct professor at Wayne State University Law School, and was appointed Associate Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court in 1985; and,

WHEREAS, he was elected to an eight-year term on the court the following year and, in his final year on the bench, was named the most respected judge in Michigan by Michigan Lawyers Weekly; and,

WHEREAS, President-elect Archer has had a long and distinguished commitment to the organized bar, having served as preside...
