Body
WHEREAS, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference of Kansas City begins its 35th annual celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., on January 9, 2004; and,

WHEREAS, this week-long event kicks-off with an inter faith workshop and worship service at the Community Christian Church featuring saxophone player Kirk Whalum at 7:00 p.m. on Monday; and,

WHEREAS, another highlight of the celebration is a community luncheon featuring Marian Wright Edelman, President of the Children's Defense Fund, to be held at Downtown Marriott; and,

WHEREAS, on Monday, January 12, Judge Greg Mathis will be the featured speaker at a youth leadership conference to be held at the Kauffman Foundation, where he will speak to students about his life growing up in a crime and gang-ridden community in Michigan and his own rise from a high-school dropout who spent time in jail as a teenager, to a well-respected judge; and,

WHEREAS, these events and many others help focus the community's attention on Dr. King's lasting contributions to our society; now therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature recognizes the Southern Christian Leadership Conference of Kansas City on its upcoming 35th annual celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and extends to the Conference every good wish for a successful event.


Enacted and Approved
Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
