WHEREAS, Carol Coe, a former County Legislator and Member of the Kansas City Council, passed away on February 14, 2021; and,
WHEREAS, Ms. Coe was an attorney and civil rights activist who fought passionately for her community; and,
WHEREAS, Ms. Coe attended the University of Missouri - Kansas City School of Law from 1973 to 1976, as a member of the school’s largest class to date of Black students whose graduates included two judges and eight practicing lawyers; and,
WHEREAS, Ms. Coe served as an Assistant City Attorney for the City of Kansas City, Missouri, a member of the County Legislature representing the Second District-At-Large, and the City Council of Kansas City, Missouri, representing the Third District; and,
WHEREAS, Ms. Coe served on the Board of Directors for Freedom, Inc., where she advocated for the African American community; and,
WHEREAS, Ms. Coe founded the Green Acres Community Garden and Research Project, a nonprofit organization that provides healthy food options, educational opportunities, and community service within the urban core; and,
WHEREAS, Ms. Coe was a fierce activist in our community, working to promote economic development, housing opportunities, and better neighborhoods; and,
WHEREAS, Ms. Coe’s children, Douglas Coe, William Coe, Tijani Cole, and Ailey Pope, her nine grandchildren, and all of her beloved friends mourn her passing; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby recognizes the life and extraordinary achievements of Carol Coe and extends its deepest sympathy to her family and friends.

Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
