INTRODUCED BY  Victor E. Callahan, Fred Arbanas, Bill Petrie, Scott Burnett,

                                                               Ronald E. Finley,  Dennis Waits,  Dan Tarwater, Terry Young,

                                                               and Bob Spence, County Legislators

 

 

Body

WHEREAS, the members of the Legislature have been deeply saddened by the death of James Prentice "Jim"  Nunn; and,

 

WHEREAS, in the struggle to improve the quality of life in Kansas City and Jackson County, Jim Nunn was a leader who will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him; and,

 

WHEREAS, Jim was the first Executive Director of Move Up, an organization created by the merger of Project Neighborhood and the Ad Hoc Group Against Crime; and,

 

WHEREAS, under Jim's direction, Move Up organized efforts throughout the county to prevent crime, violence, substance abuse and health-related problems; and,

 

WHEREAS, Jim, a lifelong resident of Kansas City, Missouri, attended Kumpf Elementary and, after graduating from Paseo High School in 1968, entered the U.S. Army in 1969 and received an honorable discharge as a Specialist 4th Class in 1972; and,

 

WHEREAS, Jim began his career in law enforcement on July 5, 1972, as a Patrolman with the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department where he launched many successful programs and community policing efforts such as the Drug Intervention Unit and Bike Patrol; and, during his 27 ½ years with the Police Department, he rose through the ranks, retiring as Deputy Chief of Police in January 2000; and,

 

WHEREAS, his organizational memberships included the Boys and Girls Club Board of Directors, Rose Brooks Center Board of Directors, Genesis School Board of Directors and the Ad Hoc Group Against Crime Board of Directors; and,

 

WHEREAS, Jim is survived by Nellie Yvonne Nunn, his wife of twenty-eight years; a sister, Patricia A. Nunn of Kansas City; four half-sisters; Leota Jones and Corrinne Patterson of Kansas City; Kathleen D. Crews of Tyler, Texas; and Elizabeth  E. Jackson of Dayton, Ohio; his mother and father-in-law, Mr.  and  Mrs. Clyde Mitchell; a nephew, David Allen King; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, cousins, other relatives and friends; and,

 

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the members of the Legislature respectfully honor the memory of James Prentice Nunn, a distinguished Jackson County civic leader, and extend to his wife, his family and friends their most sincere sympathy upon his untimely death.

Effective Date:  This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
