A RESOLUTION congratulating Commissioner Maynard Harvey, Sr., on the eleven years of service to the Jackson County Commission on Human Relations and Citizen Complaints.

Body

WHEREAS, the Jackson County Commission on Human Relations and Citizen Complaints was established under Article X of the Constitutional Home Rule Charter of Jackson County, adopted by a vote of the County's citizens on November 3, 1970; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Charter went into effect January 1, 1973, and, on March 17, 1973, the OHRCC Commission held its first meeting; and,

 

WHEREAS, the original Commission members were Chairman, Sidney Willens, Ella Jo Tolbert, Helen Haugh, Carl Bua, Patricia Hardy-Glorioso, John Gabett, William Carson, and Robert Tischner; and,

 

WHEREAS, appointed by the County Executive, the Commission's Charter mission and responsibilities are to work with citizen problems pertaining to County government; and,

 

WHEREAS, Commissioner Maynard Harvey, Sr., was first appointed to the Commission by Marsha Murphy, County Executive, on June 15, 1992, for a term to expire March 1, 1993; was reappointed  to the Commission by Ms. Murphy, on April 5, 1993, for a term to expire March 1, 1997; was reappointed to the Commission by Katheryn J. Shields, County Executive, on June 18, 1997, for a term to expire March 1, 2001; was reappointed to the Commission by Ms. Shields on August 19, 2002, for a term to expire March 1, 2005; and,

 

WHEREAS, in March 2003, the Jackson County Human Relations and Citizen Complaints Commission will recognize and honor Commissioner Harvey for 11 years of service as a Commissioner representing the 2nd Legislative District; and,

 

WHEREAS, Commissioner Harvey will be recognized for his distinguished and exemplary public service furthering human relations for the citizens of Jackson County from June 1992 to March 2003; and,

 

WHEREAS, Commissioner Harvey has received honors and awards such as Businessman of the Year-National Association of Marketing Developers, Distinguished Service Award, O.I.C's  of America-Washington, D.C., Man of the Year, Kansas City Office Products Association, E.H. Brunch Service Award, Sunshine District Association-Kansas City, Missouri, and Role Model for Youth Award, M.M.B.C; and,

 

WHEREAS, Commissioner Harvey is a member of Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church, past Chairman of Deacons - 15 years, Director-Region VII National Baptist Brotherhood Union, past President-Sunshine District Brotherhood - 23 years, President Emeritus-General Baptist State Convention Brotherhood Union, Board Member-Baptist World Alliance Men's Dept, past Master-Blue Valley Lodge #64-32nd Mason, member-Kansas City Consistory No. 7, past Association Patron-Queen of Sheba-Chapter #19 OES, Worth Patron-Queen of Sheba-Chapter#9 OES, National Office Products Association, Kansas City Office Products Association, Advisory Board-Urban League, Board of Directors-Better Business Bureau of Kansas City, Missouri, Advisory Board-Lincoln/Coles Council of Parents and Teachers, National Association of Marketing Developers, Executive Trade Association, Life Member-NAACP (National Association for Advancement of Colored People); and,

 

WHEREAS, Commissioner Harvey married Mabel (Newman) Harvey on February 15, 1952, most recently celebrating 51 years of marriage; and,

 

WHEREAS, Commissioner Harvey is the proud father of three children:  Maynard Harvey, Jr., Duane Harvey, and Deidre (Harvey) McClellan; and,

 

WHEREAS, Commissioner Harvey is the proud grandfather of 10 grandchildren:  seven girls and three boys, and he also has five great grandchildren; now therefore,

 

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri that the Legislature recognizes Commissioner Maynard Harvey, Sr., for his 11 years of service to the Human Relations and Citizen Complaints Commission.

 

Enacted and Approved

Effective Date:  This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
