A RESOLUTION expressing the sympathy of the Legislature to the family and friends of Herman A. Johnson, upon the occasion of his death.

Body

WHEREAS, the members of the Legislature extend their deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Herman A. Johnson, who departed this life on Tuesday, February 17, 2004; and,

 

WHEREAS, Herman was born December 19, 1916, in Schenectady, New York; and,

 

WHEREAS, Herman earned a bachelor's degree from Cornell University and continued with graduate studies at the University of Chicago; and,

 

WHEREAS, Herman served with the Tuskegee Airmen in World War II and was a distinguished war veteran; and,

 

WHEREAS, in the late1950's Herman moved to Kansas City, where he gained recognition as an accomplished business leader; and,

 

WHEREAS, Herman dedicated his life to the pursuit of justice by serving his community as a legislator, activist, and successful businessman; and,

 

WHEREAS, his volunteer efforts and memberships included the Civic Council of Greater Kansas City, the Heart of America United Way, the Local Investment Commission (LINC), the Chamber of Commerce, and the Center for Business Innovation; and,

 

WHEREAS, Herman was elected twice to  serve as President of the Kansas City Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP);  and,

 

WHEREAS, Herman was well known in the community as a civil rights advocate and a distinguished leader in civic affairs; and,

 

WHEREAS, Herman A. Johnson is survived by his wife, Dorothy, his daughter Tara Kaye Townsend Johnson and husband, Curtis, grandson Billy Dee Townsend and wife Angel, grandson DeMarquis Townsend, two great-granddaughters, many nephews and nieces,  and a host of other relatives and friends; now therefore,

 

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby extends its deepest sympathy to family and friends of Herman A. Johnson upon the occasion of his death.

 

Enacted and Approved

Effective Date:  This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
