A RESOLUTION encouraging the Citizens Stamp Advisory Committee and the Postmaster General to issue a stamp recognizing "York,"  an African-American participant of the Lewis and Clark expedition.

INTRODUCED BY Ronald E. Finley, County Legislator

 

 

Body

WHEREAS, we are celebrating the 200th Anniversary of the Lewis and Clark expedition; and,

 

WHEREAS, "York" was an African-American slave to Captain William Clark who made significant contributions to the success of the Lewis and Clark expedition, particularly in negotiations with a variety of Indian tribes; and,

 

WHEREAS, the historic significance of "York's" efforts have been overlooked and unrecognized; and,

 

WHEREAS, it is important to recognize the contributions made by "York" and it would be absolutely appropriate for the United States Postal Service to offer this recognition by issuing a stamp in his honor bearing and his likeness; therefore,

 

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature encourages the Citizens Stamp Advisory Committee and the Postmaster General to honor "York" with the issuance of a stamp printed with his picture.

 

Enacted and Approved

Effective Date:  This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
