Body

WHEREAS, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference is sponsoring the 2003 Kansas City metropolitan area celebration of the birth and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; and,

                                                               

WHEREAS, the year 2003 marks the 34th anniversary of the Kansas City metropolitan celebration and the nation’s 18th observance of the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as a holiday; and,

                     

WHEREAS, this year’s “Music: Soul of the Movement” holiday celebration will kick-off on Friday, January 10, with an interfaith jazz and gospel workshop, featuring tenor saxophonist Kirk Whalum; and,

 

WHEREAS, additional guest speakers include:  Michael Charles, L. Leon Dixon, Elton Gumbel, Jr., Anita Parin, NaRon Hamilton, Lisa Henry, Kammlie Woodard, Reverend Nelson “Fuzzy” Thompson (SCLC’s president), and Marvin Jackson; and,

WHEREAS, workshops will provide insight into the music industry and the effect music has had on history; and,

 

WHEREAS,   other events include:  a youth leadership workshop, a jazz, poetry, and soul serenade, a community breakfast, a teen summit and concert featuring talented youth from the local area, a public forum, a candlelight vigil honoring Dr. King, and the 2003 Black Achievers Scholarships and Awards Dinner; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Jackson County Legislature commends the Southern Christian Leadership Conference for its longstanding commitment to keeping the dream and the legacy of  Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. alive; now therefore,

                                                                                                                                                                        

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby commends the Southern Christian Leadership Conference upon sponsoring the 2003 Kansas City metropolitan celebration of the birth and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

 

 

Enacted and Approved

Effective Date:  This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
