RESOLUTION NO. 21246, April 17, 2023

Body
WHEREAS, on Yom HaShoah, or Holocaust Remembrance Day, we reflect on and remember the six million Jews and millions of other innocent people including Roma, Sinti, Slavs, persons with disabilities, and LGBTQIA+ individuals, among others, who were systematically murdered during World War II by the Nazi regime and their collaborators; and,

WHEREAS, this year, Holocaust Remembrance Day begins at sundown on Monday, April 17, and ends at sundown, April 18; and,

WHEREAS, in Israel, Yom HaShoah falls on the 27th day of the month of Nisan, which falls on different dates in the United States from year-to-year; and,

WHEREAS, the Legislature acknowledges the importance of educating everyone about the history of the Holocaust, its causes and consequences, and the heroic efforts of those who resisted and rescued others; and,

WHEREAS, the Legislature commits to preserving the memory of the victims and survivors and to passing on their legacy to future generations; and,

WHEREAS, the Legislature recognizes the need to continue fighting against antisemitism and all forms of racism and discrimination, wherever they occur; and,

WHEREAS, according to the Anti-Defamation League, antisemitic incidents in the United States increased thirty-six percent in 2022; and,

WHEREAS, the Legislature stands in solidarity with Jewish communities around the world and pledges to support efforts to combat hate speech, hate crimes, and all forms of violence and intolerance; now therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature does hereby commemorate Yom HaShoah or Holocaust Remembrance Day, and remembers and honors all of those persons who died in the Holocaust; and,
