Body
WHEREAS, gun violence remains the leading cause of death for children and adolescents in the United States, according to the latest mortality data published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; and,
WHEREAS, nearly six out of every ten gun deaths are suicides; and,
WHEREAS, four out of every ten gun deaths are homicides; and,
WHEREAS, over 4.5 million women in the United States today report having been threatened with a gun by an intimate partner; and,
WHEREAS, children living in poverty - urban and rural - are more likely to die due to gun violence than their more affluent peers; and,
WHEREAS, children of color are far more likely to experience campus gun violence, more than twice as likely for Hispanic students and over three times as likely for Black students; and,
WHEREAS, gun violence and school shootings are a uniquely American epidemic; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature acknowledges that gun violence is one of the most pressing social and public health issues facing our residents and must be stopped; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature requests the downtown Jackson County Courthouse be lit with the color orange, the defining color of the gun violence prevention movement, from June 2, 2023, through June 4, 2023; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature recognizes June 2023 as Gun Violence Awareness Month in Jackson County.
Enacted and Approved
Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
