INTRODUCED BY Sean E. Smith, County Legislator

Body

WHEREAS, the citizens of Jackson County acknowledge and recognize the importance of National Police Week 2023, a time to honor the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers in our County and across the nation; and,

WHEREAS, on May 15, 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and, since then, this memorial has been observed annually to pay tribute to law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting their communities; and,

WHEREAS, National Police Week was established by a joint resolution of Congress, with the aim of providing special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty while upholding law and order, and ensuring the safety and security of their communities; and,

WHEREAS, over 800,000 law enforcement officers serve America today, including the dedicated public servants in our communities who tirelessly work to keep Jackson County safe; and,

WHEREAS, the residents of Jackson County recognize the crucial role played by law enforcement agencies in safeguarding the welfare of the County’s citizens, often doing so while understaffed, with staff who are overworked and underappreciated; and,

WHEREAS, it is with utmost respect and gratitude that the Legislature honors the unwavering service and dedication of the County’s law enforcement officers, who selflessly put their lives on the line to fulfill their civic duties and protect the well-being of local communities; and,

WHEREAS, the Legislature seeks to raise awareness and foster a spirit of appreciation among the citizenry for the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers; now therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby designates the week of May 14-20, 2023, as National Police Week in Jackson County, and urges all citizens to join in commemorating May 15, 2023, as Peace Officers Memorial Day, paying tribute to the heroic sacrifices of these valiant public servants.
