RESOLUTION NO. 21276, May 15, 2023

 

INTRODUCED BY DaRon McGee and Megan L. Marshall, County Legislators

 

 

Body

 WHEREAS, Rodrick Sparks of Lee’s Summit, MO, has made history by becoming the first African American elected President of the Lee's Summit Board of Education; and,

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Sparks was first elected to the Lee’s Summit Board of Education in April 2021; and,

 

WHEREAS, the County Legislature is committed to promoting educational equity and ensuring that all children have access to the resources necessary to maximize their highest potential; and,

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Sparks has demonstrated his own commitment to educational equity through his leadership and advocacy for fair benefits and wages as past President of United Steelworkers Local 13-07; and,

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Sparks has further demonstrated his commitment to youth and families through his service as a youth director, youth pastor, and present church administrator at his local fellowship, as well as his membership on the board of Wedgewood Pointe HOA, Master Mason at St. James Lodge #59, and as a PTA member at Hazel Grove Elementary School; and,

WHEREAS, Mr. Sparks attended Kansas City, Kansas Community College and Liberty University, pursuing degrees in leadership and management; and,

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Sparks presently is an Escrow Assistant for Security 1st Title; and,

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Sparks' election as Board President follows the trailblazing efforts of Legislator Megan L. Marshall, the first African American member, to serve on the Lee's Summit School Board; and,

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Sparks' dedication to serving his community and promoting educational equity serves as an inspiration to all who strive to make a positive impact in the lives of our youth and families; now therefore,

 

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri that the Legislature hereby congratulates Rodrick Sparks on his historic election as the first African American President of the Lee's Summit School Board and thanks him for his dedication to serving the students and families of the Lee's Summit School District; and,

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature encourages all citizens to follow Rodrick Sparks' example of leadership and commitment to educational equity, and to work together to ensure that all children have access to the resources they need to reach their full potential.

 

Enacted and Approved

Effective Date:  This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
