RESOLUTION NO. 21243, April 17, 2023

INTRODUCED BY Manuel Abarca IV, County Legislator

Body

WHEREAS, the Cesar E. Chavez Scholarship was established in 2003 to provide financial assistance to a graduating high school senior of a Kansas City metropolitan high school who plans to attend the University of Central Missouri (UCM); and,

WHEREAS, the scholarship is named after Cesar E. Chavez, an American labor leader and civil rights activist who co-founded the National Farm Workers Association; and,

WHEREAS, the Cesar E. Chavez Scholarship is a prestigious award that is highly sought after by eligible students in the Kansas City metropolitan area; and,

WHEREAS, the scholarship has been awarded to more than 40 individuals since its inception, and provides $12,500.00 over four years or eight semesters to cover direct costs the student will incur for attendance at UCM; and,

WHEREAS, the scholarship can be used to cover tuition and fees, housing, and books, and can be reduced on a student-by-student basis if grant and scholarship funding received is more than the direct cost to the student; and,

WHEREAS, the first annual Cesar E. Chavez Scholarship was presented in 2004 at the Guadalupe Center in Kansas City, Missouri, during the annual Cesar E. Chavez Festival; and,

WHEREAS, during 2004’s Hispanic Heritage Day, Missouri Governor Bob Holden recognized UCM with a proclamation for establishing this scholarship, the first of its kind in the State of Missouri; and,

WHEREAS, the scholarship is open to graduating seniors of high schools located in the Kansas City metropolitan area who have been accepted to UCM, are of Hispanic or Latino descent or demonstrate involvement in the Hispanic or Latino community, and have a minimum high school cumulative GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale following the seventh semester of high school; now therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature recognizes Cesar E. Chavez Scholarship for its important contributions to the Kansas City metropolitan area and for providing financial assistance to deserving students seeking to further their education at UCM; and,
