Body

 WHEREAS, each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15 by celebrating the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America; and,

 

WHEREAS, this recognition of Hispanic heritage began under the leadership of Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson, and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a month-long period, codified by Congress on August 17, 1988; and,

 

WHEREAS, approximately ten percent of Jackson County residents and about twenty percent of Americans are Hispanic, the fastest growing ethnic segment of society, contributing more than $1.5 trillion annually to our nation’s economy; and,

 

WHEREAS, in Jackson County, National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated through numerous festivals, activities, and events to commemorate the impact of Hispanic heritage on our community; and,

 

 

WHEREAS, celebrations in our area include the Kansas City Fiesta Hispana to be held September 16 - 18, 2022, at Barney Allis Plaza, a story time and other family activities to be held September 17, 2022, at the BlendWell Café in Independence, the Latino Arts Festival to be held September 24, 2022, at the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Overland Park, KS, the Mattie Rhodes Center Annual Día de los Muertos event to be held October 7, 2022, the Guadalupe Center’s Blanco y Negro fundraising gala to be held October 8, 2022, at Union Station, and the YLPKC (Young Latin Professionals) XV Celebration to be held October 15, 2022, at Evergy, among many others; and,

 

WHEREAS, celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month reaffirms that diversity is one of our greatest strengths and recognizes the value and impact Hispanic people have had on our community; now therefore,

 

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby declares September 15 to October 15 as National Hispanic Heritage Month and urges all residents to celebrate and honor the accomplishments and rich ancestry and traditions of the Hispanic community.

 

Enacted and Approved

Effective Date:  This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
