Intro

RESOLUTION NO. 20759, September 13, 2021

INTRODUCED BY Theresa Cass Galvin and Dan Tarwater III, County Legislators

Body

WHEREAS, Sgt. Doug Blodgett of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office has been appointed to the Missouri Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Disaster Response Committee; and,

WHEREAS, the committee was formed in 2011 in response to the Joplin tornado, which brought awareness that while first responders are taking care of their communities, these officers needed food, relief, and assistance themselves; and,

WHEREAS, the FOP recognized the need for a dedicated group of capable individuals who could respond to disaster areas, whether natural or manmade, to ensure their fellow officers were provided food and other assistance to allow them to continue their dangerous and necessary duties of enforcing laws and ensuring stability in an unstable environment; and,

WHEREAS, since the initial deployment of the team, the Missouri FOP disaster response unit developed a mutual aid agreement between Missouri and Oklahoma, requiring the two states to deploy together to ensure enough personnel to carry out their mission; and,

WHEREAS, in the past ten years, Missouri FOP disaster response has been deployed to St. Louis, Missouri, Lake Charles, Louisiana, Gulf Shores, Alabama, Thibodaux, Louisiana, and other locations; and,

WHEREAS, initially the mission was to ensure first responders were fed and to provide a sense of normalcy in the chaos, but the mission has evolved into special teams to handle demolition duties, roofing, water and flood remediation, and carpentry to assist with damage to the homes of first responders as well as those within the civilian community who request help; now therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby recognizes Sgt. Doug Blodgett on this appointment to the Missouri Fraternal Order of Police Disaster Response Committee and expresses its gratitude for his service in times of emergency.
