INTRODUCED BY Crystal Williams, Scott Burnett, Alfred Jordan, Tony Miller, Dennis Waits, Greg Grounds and Garry J. Baker, County Legislators
Body
WHEREAS, the Kansas/Missouri Dream Alliance (KSMODA) was founded in 2008 to advocate for dignity and respect of immigrant youth in our area; and,
WHEREAS, by 2010 KSMODA was a national force leading the fight for the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act, with founders Yahaira Carrillo, Myrna Orozco, Erin Fleming, Will Suarez, Miro Heynik, Alejandra Valles, Ricardo Quiñonez, and early member Diana Martinez; and,
WHEREAS, KSMODA exercised civil disobedience and “coming out of the shadow” events where undocumented youth could share their personal stories of living in uncertainty; and,
WHEREAS, KSMODA has also supported campaigns for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and has promoted mentoring programs to aid young immigrants trying to navigate college while addressing the psychological trauma and stress of being a part of the undocumented community; and,
WHEREAS, recently KSMODA has taken up the fight related to deportation defense campaigns, including training to educate our community on our constitutionally protected rights; and,
WHEREAS, in celebration of its 10th Anniversary, KSMODA will host a gala on September 21, 2018, at The Venue in Leawood, 4800 W. 135th, Suite 108, Leawood, Kansas; and,
WHEREAS, this event will feature keynote speaker Greisa Martinez Rosas, Executive Director of United We Dream, presenting a program on building power by fearlessly defending the rights of undocumented immigrants and advocating for the rights of women; and,
WHEREAS, the KSMODA Gala will support its outreach training, and lobbying programs; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby recognizes the Kansas/Missouri Dream Alliance on the occasion of its 10th Anniversary and extends best wishes to the organization for a successful gala event.
