Body
WHEREAS, Lee's Summit Police Detective Shawn Rath, age 44, passed away August 26, 2017, after a yearlong battle with melanoma, a type of skin cancer; and,

WHEREAS, funeral services for Detective Rath were held August 30, 2017, at Legacy Christian Church in Lee's Summit; and,

WHEREAS, Detective Rath had endured numerous rounds of cancer treatments as well as ten surgeries; and,

WHEREAS, the Lee's Summit Police Department and area citizens had turned out in force in July at a fundraiser for Detective Rath, raising over $13,000 to provide assistance to his family; and,

WHEREAS, the fundraiser for Detective Rath was held at the Lee's Summit Fun House Pizza restaurant and was supported by the Kansas City Jeep Club; and,

WHEREAS, Detective Rath served for over ten years with the Lee's Summit Police Department on the crisis intervention team and as a hostage negotiator, and had over twenty years' service in the military and law enforcement; and,

WHEREAS, Detective Rath's health battle has resulted in over $4 million in medical bills, adding to the challenge and strain of his illness; and,

WHEREAS, Detective Rath's wife Carrie, and their son Patrick, are grateful for the outpouring of support from the community during this difficult time; and,

WHEREAS, the citizens of Jackson County offer their support to Detective Rath's family and to the brave men and women of the Lee's Summit Police Department through these challenges; now therefore,
