RESOLUTION NO. 19392, February 13, 2017

 

INTRODUCED BY                     Alfred Jordan, County Legislator

 

Body

 WHEREAS, the Black Archives of Mid-America is hosting its Second Annual Black History Month luncheon, Crisis in Education, to be held February 25, 2017, at Pierson Auditorium on the campus of the University of Missouri - Kansas City; and,

 

 WHEREAS, the Honorable Emanuel Cleaver, II, of Missouri’s Fifth Congressional District, will be the keynote speaker at this fundraising event; and,

 

WHEREAS, Representative Cleaver is serving his sixth term in the U.S. House of Representatives; and,

 

WHEREAS, Representative Cleaver is a member of the House Financial Services Committee, the ranking member of the Subcommittee on Housing and Insurance, and a senior whip of the Democratic Caucus; and,

 

WHEREAS, Representative Cleaver served for twelve years on the Kansas City Council and was elected as Kansas City’s first African American Mayor in 1991; and,

 

WHEREAS, Representative Cleaver holds a bachelor’s degree from Prairie View A&M University, a master’s degree from St. Paul’s School of Theology, and is the recipient of five honorary degrees; and,

 

WHEREAS, Representative Cleaver served as the pastor of St. James United Methodist Church in Kansas City, Missouri, from March 1972 until June 2009; and,

 

WHEREAS, the mission of the Black Archives of Mid-America is to collect, preserve, and make available to the public materials documenting the social, economic, political, and cultural histories of persons of African descent in the central United States, with particular emphasis on the Kansas City, Missouri region; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Black Archives of Mid-America is an educational resource and provides access to its collections for research, exhibition, and publication to honor community heritage and catalyze public awareness; now therefore,

 

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby recognizes the Black Archives of Mid-America on the occasion of its 2017 Black History Month luncheon, Crisis in Education, to be held February 25, 2017, and extends best wishes for a successful event.

Enacted and Approved

Effective Date:  This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
