WHEREAS, the Black Archives of Mid-America is hosting its Second Annual Black History Month luncheon, Crisis in Education, to be held February 25, 2017, at Pierson Auditorium on the campus of the University of Missouri - Kansas City; and,
WHEREAS, the Honorable Emanuel Cleaver, II, of Missouri's Fifth Congressional District, will be the keynote speaker at this fundraising event; and,
WHEREAS, Representative Cleaver is serving his sixth term in the U.S. House of Representatives; and,
WHEREAS, Representative Cleaver is a member of the House Financial Services Committee, the ranking member of the Subcommittee on Housing and Insurance, and a senior whip of the Democratic Caucus; and,
WHEREAS, Representative Cleaver served for twelve years on the Kansas City Council and was elected as Kansas City's first African American Mayor in 1991; and,
WHEREAS, Representative Cleaver holds a bachelor's degree from Prairie View A&M University, a master's degree from St. Paul's School of Theology, and is the recipient of five honorary degrees; and,
WHEREAS, Representative Cleaver served as the pastor of St. James United Methodist Church in Kansas City, Missouri, from March 1972 until June 2009; and,
WHEREAS, the mission of the Black Archives of Mid-America is to collect, preserve, and make available to the public materials documenting the social, economic, political, and cultural histories of persons of African descent in the central United States, with particular emphasis on the Kansas City, Missouri region; and,
