Body
WHEREAS, Cancer Action, Inc., was founded in 1959 by a group of caring volunteers to provide services to those facing the devastating impact of cancer in the Kansas City metropolitan area; and,
WHEREAS, Cancer Action provides medical equipment and supplies, emotional support, referral programs, financial assistance, survival services, and guidance to anyone impacted by a cancer diagnosis; and,
WHEREAS, in 2001, the National Cancer Institute’s Cancer Information Service honored Cancer Action with its prestigious Partner in Patient Support Award because of its commitment to improving the quality of life of cancer patients and the comprehensive support offered by the agency; and,
WHEREAS, in 2008, the Midwest Christian Counseling Center awarded Cancer Action the Heart of American Ethics in Business Award; and,
WHEREAS, with its mission to reduce distress and improving the quality of life for those living with and beyond cancer, it is appropriate that the Legislature recognize the contribution of Cancer Action, Inc., during Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October; and,
WHEREAS, on Monday, October 17, 2016, Marshon Stephenson, together with her co-workers in the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, organized a bake sale in support of Cancer Action; and,
WHEREAS, Marshon’s efforts raised $700.00 in funds to be donated to Cancer Action to support its work in our community; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature does hereby recognize Cancer Action, Inc., for its work to provide services for those impacted by cancer and, as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, encourages all citizens, government agencies, private businesses, nonprofit organizations, and all other interested groups to join in activities that will increase awareness of what Americans can do to prevent breast cancer.

Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
