RESOLUTION NO. 19183, June 6, 2016

INTRODUCED BY Crystal Williams, County Legislator

Body
WHEREAS, the 2016 National Historic Trails Workshop, to be held June 6 - 9, 2016, is hosted by the Kansas City Area Historic Trails Association, the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation, the National Pony Express Association, the Oregon-California Trails Association, and the Santa Fe Trail Association, with the theme Trails Enhancing the Quality of Life; and,

WHEREAS, on June 7, 2016, the trails event will feature a dedication ceremony of the 1925 Bronze Medallion by the early 20th century American sculptor Avard Fairbanks, given to Jackson County by the Oregon-California Trail Association of Independence, Missouri; and,

WHEREAS, this medallion commemorates the perseverance of the pioneers who made the journey from Independence to new settlements in the American west; and,

WHEREAS, the medallion has been installed on the existing Oregon Trail marker located at the Historic Truman Courthouse; and,

WHEREAS, prior to the medallion dedication, workshop participants will tour the route of the Santa Fe, Oregon, and California National Historic Trails and end the evening with dinner at the Mallinson Hall and Vineyard in Sugar Creek, Missouri; and,

WHEREAS, the tour of the Wayne City Landing will include a re-enactment by the William Chrisman High School Drama Department with portrayals of George and Mary Sibley, the father of the Santa Fe Trail, William Becknell, the father of the California Trail, General John Bidwell, and the first mayor of Independence, William McCoy; now therefore,
