Body
WHEREAS, the name of Louis Olivero, a deputy with the Jackson County Sheriff's Office who was killed in the line of duty in 1930, was added to the United States Law Enforcement Officer Memorial in Washington, D.C. on May 13, 2015, at an event attended by Sheriff Michael Sharp and Colonel Hugh Mills; and,

WHEREAS, in 1911, after serving in the U.S. Army at Fort Leavenworth, Detective Olivero joined the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department, where he gained attention for his assignment to counter the efforts of what was then known as "The Black Hand," or the Mafia; and,

WHEREAS, Detective Olivero's reputation for apprehending members of "The Black Hand" culminated in 1919 when he solved the execution murder of Frank Carramusa, an eleven year old boy who was killed because his father would not pay an extortion demand; and,

WHEREAS, Detective Olivero persevered in the face of threats against his life and attempts by "The Black Hand" to burn down his house; and,

WHEREAS, in March 1929, Detective Olivero joined the Jackson County Sheriff's Office as the supervisor of the County Jail; and,

WHEREAS, on November 29, 1930, Detective Olivero was gunned down as he walked to work, a murder that was never solved; and,

WHEREAS, at the time of his death, Detective Olivero was 45 years old and left behind his wife, Maria, and a son, Albert; now therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby commemorates and recognizes the contribution of Louis Olivero to our Country, State, City, and County.
