Body
WHEREAS, Sophia Hoffman, a fifth grade student at Highland Park Elementary School in the Lee's Summit R-7 School District, garnered media fame for her appearance at the Jackson County Spelling Bee on February 22, 2014; and,
 
WHEREAS, Sophia and her opponent, Kush Sharma, exhausted all of the available words in 75 rounds of competition, requiring the spelling bee organizers to schedule a rematch between the two competitors on March 8, 2014, at the Kansas City Central Library; and,
 
WHEREAS, prior to the March 8 rematch, Sophia, Kush, and their families traveled to New York to appear on "Good Morning America" to discuss the marathon spelling bee; and,
 
WHEREAS, despite falling to Kush after 28 additional rounds of competition, Sophia is grateful for the experience, happy to have made a new friend in her competitor, and looks forward to competing next year; and,
 
WHEREAS, Sophia's sister Jordan is a three-time former spelling bee champion; and,
 
WHEREAS, Sophia is a member of the Lee's Summit Christian Church where she sings in the Bethany Choir and is a member of the Junior Youth Fellowship Bridge Builders Program; and,
 
WHEREAS, Sophia enjoys acting, singing, dance, and playing the violin; and,
 
WHEREAS, Sophia's parents, Mark and Ruth Hoffman, and sister Jordan are justifiably proud of their daughter and sister; now therefore,
 
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby congratulates Sophia Hoffman on her impressive showing in the Jackson County Spelling Bee, and extends best wishes to her in all of her future endeavors.

Effective Date:  This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
