Body
WHEREAS, Matthew Ellis, a Lee's Summit High School senior, has been named a finalist in the National Merit Scholarship program; and,
WHEREAS, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, founded in 1955, is a privately- financed, not-for-profit corporation that operates without government assistance, and provides National Merit Scholarship awards, worth approximately $33 million; and,
WHEREAS, National Merit Scholarships are underwritten by nearly 500 independent sponsor organizations and institutions as well as with the corporation's own funds; and,
WHEREAS, through his pursuit of academic excellence, Matthew who has earned the designation of National Merit Scholarship finalist, carries a GPA of 4.35 on a 4.0 scale and is ranked 8th in his class of 430; and,
WHEREAS, Matthew has been an active student at Lee's Summit High, where he has been a member of the Math Club and Symphony Orchestra, and has lettered in Academics and in Math Club; and,
WHEREAS, Matthew has also been involved as an A+ tutor, and excelled in Boy Scouts of America, where he was named Eagle Scout, and Young Champions Karate, where he holds a black belt; and,
WHEREAS, Matthew plans to attend Iowa State University in the fall and major in Chemical Engineering; and,
WHEREAS, Matthew's parents, Laura and James Carothers and Gary and Sherry Ellis, and his siblings, Weston, James, Lacie, and Jamie, join in Matthew's celebration of this distinguished honor; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature congratulates Matthew Ellis on his designation as a National Merit Scholarship finalist and wishes him well in all future endeavors.
