Body
WHEREAS, on January 18, 2002, at approximately 5:10 p.m., Department of Corrections training supervisor Nick Arello responded quickly to a dangerous situation and assisted the Kansas City Missouri Police Department with apprehending a suspected bank robber; and,

WHEREAS, upon entering the US Bank branch office at Red Bridge and Holmes, Nick was informed by a bank employee that the bank had just been robbed; and,

WHEREAS, the employee pointed to the suspect who was walking away from the bank; and,

WHEREAS, Nick instinctively responded to the situation, which led to a car chase and a brief struggle with the suspect before he broke loose from Nick's hold on him; and,

WHEREAS, Nick and three other bystanders, Kurt Whirley, John Dawson and David Rice gave chase, caught up with the suspect, and held him down until police arrived; and,
WHEREAS, Nick recovered the stolen money from the suspect and returned it to the bank; and,

WHEREAS, Nick is a hero by any standard and deserves the highest praise and recognition for this heroic act; and,

WHEREAS, he received a letter of appreciation from the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department which recognized his courageous act on that day; and,

WHEREAS, Nick will also receive formal recognition from the police department during the Board of Police Commissioners' meeting on March 26, 2002, at 9:00 a.m., in the boardroom on the 6th Floor of Police Headquarters, 1125 Locust, Kansas City, Missouri; now therefore,
