RESOLUTION NO. 21148, January 30, 2023

Body
WHEREAS, it is the Legislature's understanding that an independent investor intends to develop a public landfill within the southeastern part of the City of Kansas City, Jackson County, less than one mile from the Lee's Summit city limits; and,

WHEREAS, the intended site of the proposed landfill is within one mile of the County's Longview Lake Park and near the watershed of Longview Lake, posing a significant risk to this vital public asset and the environment; and,

WHEREAS, it is in the interest of the County to protect the health of its constituents and it is widely understood that residents living in close proximity to a landfill have increased health risks and developmental abnormalities; and,

WHEREAS, such a project would negatively impact this area's economic development including, but not limited to, the decline of property values and negative implications for future development; and,


WHEREAS, it is in the interest of the County to protect its assets such as schools, quality of life, and the ability to carry on with recreational activities without interruption; and,

WHEREAS, the close proximity of Summit Point Elementary School to the proposed landfill makes this location far from ideal; and,

WHEREAS, to date there has not been any formal permit application for such a project nor has the City of Kansas City, Missouri's government had the opportunity to publicly discuss this project as an agenda item before its city council, nor has any public hearing been scheduled on the subject; now therefore,
