Body
WHEREAS, Centennial United Methodist Church was founded as a result of the merger of Asbury Chapel Methodist Episcopal Church and Burns Chapel Methodist Episcopal Church, both dating their beginnings to the 1880s; and,

WHEREAS, the recorded history of the Centennial United Methodist Church begins when final plans for merger were approved at the Central Missouri Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Joplin, Missouri, on March 20, 1907; and,

WHEREAS, the Rev. J. Will Jackson was appointed the first pastor of the church and was followed by many others, including the current exceptional leadership of Reverend Emanuel Cleaver III, who have all worked tirelessly to develop one of the most effective churches in the Jackson County community; and,

WHEREAS, in July 1926, ground was broken on the Centennial building currently used for worship under the leadership of Rev. Martin Luther Mackay and the unfailing faith and prayers of its members; and,

WHEREAS, the Centennial Church cost more than $75,000.00 to build and it was reported to be the largest and most modern church of its denomination in the Central West Conference at the time; and,

WHEREAS, the two story building of neo-classical architecture with pedimented entry facade and white columns, similar to the White House in Washington, D.C., is made of native Missouri stone and was described in the Kansas City Call as being a "magnificent stone church of imposing dimensions"; and,
