Body
WHEREAS, each year the Variety Club presents its Humanitarian Service Award to an individual who has made exceptional personal contributions in helping special needs children in the area; and,
WHEREAS, the recipient of this award for 1999 is Lu Vaughan, an Independence resident who has not only made substantial financial contributions to the Variety Club, but has dedicated countless hours of his time and energy to helping underprivileged children; and,
WHEREAS, Lu Vaughan has been involved with the Variety Club since 1974, when he co-founded the Sunshine Center School, helping lead the Variety Club out of a period of dormancy and into a productive era; and,
WHEREAS, the Variety Club began in 1927, with 75 chapters existing worldwide today, and more than 30 local charities are recipients of the organization's contributions; and,
WHEREAS, more than $4 million has been raised by the Kansas City chapter, helping such organizations as Hope House and the Sunshine Center School; and,
WHEREAS, Lu Vaughan spent most of his career as owner of a chain of movie theaters, and he also established eastern Jackson County's cable television system in the early 1970's; and,
WHEREAS, Lu Vaughan is to be commended for his commitment to such a worthy cause, for demonstrating a true compassion for others, and for being dedicated to the task of enriching the lives of underprivileged children; and,
WHEREAS, admiration, respect, and appreciation go out to Lu Vaughan for his devotion and spirit of giving of himself and his resources; therefore,
