Body
WHEREAS, Elyssa Brogdon of Independence, a sixth grader at Raytown Middle School, was recently selected to participate in the American Co-Ed National Speech Competition to be held in Orlando, Florida, in November 2000; and,
WHEREAS, Elyssa qualified for this honor with her performance of her speech "Compassion," at the Missouri Co-ed Competition held in St. Louis in August 2000; and,
WHEREAS, at the state event, she also received the Spirit of America Award for Community Service, an Outstanding Achievement Award, and was first runner-up for the Best Application Award; and,
WHEREAS, Elyssa has also received recognition for her poetry, including publication of her poem "One Moment" in an anthology published by the International Poets Society and an invitation to read the poem at the society convention held in August 2000 in Washington, D.C; and,
WHEREAS, Elyssa was recently recognized by the Missouri House of Representatives with a "Glory of Missouri" award and with a resolution citing her as an "outstanding young Missouri citizen;" and,
WHEREAS, Elyssa is an avid flutist in the band at her school, and gives much credit to the direction she receives from Dr. Bud Haley and her Olympians Cheerleading Coach, Tamara Bass; and,
WHEREAS, Elyssa is an aspiring attorney who cares deeply about humanitarian and ecology issues and who regularly shares her views on these and other subjects with government officials at all levels; and,
WHEREAS, Elyssa is the daughter of Carla Brogdon of Independence; now therefore,
