Body
WHEREAS, on March 22, 2010, the United States Congress passed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, which brings healthcare reform to millions of Americans; and,
WHEREAS, many benefits of the Act took effect on the six-month anniversary of its passage, including a new Patient Bill of Rights, a rebate for certain Medicare beneficiaries, and tax credits for small businesses; and,
WHEREAS, the new law helps young adults, who traditionally have the highest rate of uninsured, by allowing them to remain covered on their parents' health plans longer; and,
WHEREAS, the new health care reform law prohibits gender discrimination, which has traditionally affected women through higher premiums, and denial of coverage for pre-existing conditions, such as pregnancy, breast cancer, and a history of Caesarean sections; and,
WHEREAS, the new health care reform law helps children by preventing insurance companies from denying coverage for pre-existing conditions, a benefit that will ensure that 115,100 Missouri children under the age of 18 will not be denied coverage; and,
WHEREAS, implementation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act will take the cooperation and support of consumers, health care providers, businesses, government agencies, and elected leaders to continue to improve and build upon the new law to bring the greatest benefits to Missouri and our nation; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature recognizes the benefits that the Affordable Care Act will bring to the State of Missouri and to our community and pledges its support for continued health care...
