A RESOLUTION in honor of Women's History Month recognition is due to Mamie Hughes, a trailblazer in community service and advocacy.

Body
WHEREAS, Ms. Hughes arrived in the Jackson County area in 1949 as an adult ready to make a difference in the community; and,
WHEREAS, Ms. Hughes wore many hats, which included being the mother of five children, maintaining a teaching career, holding an elected office, and engaging in civic affairs; and,
WHEREAS, Ms. Hughes was engaged in many projects to help people, including establishing the Meals on Wheels program in the Kansas City area, was a key person who sought out economic development of the 18th and Vine Jazz District, and offering leadership service to the Negro Leagues Museum, among many other roles she played to advance others; and,
WHEREAS, Ms. Hughes has received numerous awards for her work, most prominently being inducted into the Starr Women's Hall of Fame, an award recognizing women who have made great accomplishments in the Kansas City area; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED that the Jackson County Legislature hereby honors Mamie Hughes for her trailblazing contributions to the community, and civic engagement.

Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
