Body
WHEREAS, Kristen Merrell, a teacher at Lee's Summit Elementary, and the Lee's Summit R-7 School District 2011-2012 Teacher of the Year, was named Missouri's Teacher of the Year on August 23, 2011; and,
WHEREAS, Mrs. Merrell was among six finalists selected from throughout Missouri by a state-wide committee and is the third Missouri Teacher of the Year from the Lee's Summit R-7 School District; and,
WHEREAS, Mrs. Merrell has been with the R-7 district for twelve years, teaching kindergarten, third, fourth, and fifth grades at Lee's Summit Elementary after previously teaching sixth grade at Prairie View Elementary and at Pleasant Lea Elementary; and,
WHEREAS, Mrs. Merrell has a bachelor's degree in elementary education from the University of Missouri - Kansas City, a master's degree in curriculum and instruction from Webster University, and is currently pursuing a specialist degree in school administration through the University of Central Missouri; and,
WHEREAS, Mrs. Merrell is a member of the Missouri State Teachers Association, the International Reading Association, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the Lee's Summit High School Booster Club, and she volunteers for the Lee's Summit United Methodist Church's summer lunch program; and,
WHEREAS, Mrs. Merrell has received thirteen Lee's Summit Educational Foundation PEAK grants, was named Math and Logic Teacher of the Year, was a 2007 state finalist for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, and has received Missouri Title V Grants in 2004 and 2005; and,
