RESOLUTION #11379, August 12, 1996

INTRODUCED BY Dixie M. Flynn, County Legislator

Body
WHEREAS, Bob Ahring, a 26-year law enforcement officer and major with the Blue Springs Police Department, recently took some vacation time so that he could provide security for the AT&T Global Olympic Village inside Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta, Georgia; and,

WHEREAS, while supervising security at one of the Olympic installations, Major Ahring was summoned by another security officer to the area of the lighting and sound tower as a canvas duffel bag had been found under a park bench; and,

WHEREAS, upon investigation of the bag, a bomb was found by bomb unit officers; and,

WHEREAS, Major Ahring immediately began evacuating people in the area and while standing only 10 yards from the tower, the bomb exploded, knocking Major Ahring onto his stomach about seven feet away; and,

WHEREAS, Major Ahring became aware of a number of injured individuals around him and quickly radioed for medical assistance; and,

WHEREAS, Major Ahring then searched out his son, also working close by, finding him unharmed; and,

WHEREAS, Major Ahring sustained minor injuries having been hit by shrapnel, with a cut on his leg and a gash on his left shoulder blade; and,

WHEREAS, Major Ahring deserves the highest of praise, having been placed in a situation of such great magnitude, for his quick action in his immediate order of evacuation of the area prior to the explosion and for radioing for medical assistance to assist the injured immediately after the incident; now therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby commends Major Ahring for his efforts as a security supervis...
