Body
WHEREAS, Lee's Summit High School mathematics teacher Lea Ann Pitcher was recently named one of one hundred national recipients of the 2005 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science teaching; and,

WHEREAS, established by Congress in 1983, this annual Presidential awards program identifies highly qualified mathematics and science teachers with recommendations for the award being made by a panel of leading mathematicians, scientists, and educators; and,

WHEREAS, Lea Ann received a $10,000 grant from the National Science Foundation and attended a week of recognition activities in Washington, D.C., where she received a citation from President Bush; and,

WHEREAS, Lea Ann has taught mathematics for eleven years at Lee's Summit High School and prior to her teaching career, worked as a pharmacist for ten years; and,

WHEREAS, Lea Ann co-sponsors the Lee's Summit High School Math Club, serves on the Principal's Advisory team, and is a member of the National and Missouri Councils of Teachers of Mathematics; and,

WHEREAS, Lee's Summit High School principal, John Faulkenberry, describes Lea Ann as a teacher with "a passion for teaching struggling math learners" who is "magical" in helping them develop their skills; now therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby congratulates Lea Ann Pitcher upon being selected as the Missouri recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching and extends sincere appreciation for her dedication to providing a positive learning...
