Body
WHEREAS, one violent crime is committed in America every 19 seconds; and,
WHEREAS, in 1997, although our nation's crime rate underwent an historic drop, residents of Jackson County still experienced approximately 17,980 crimes of violence; and,
WHEREAS, when one man, woman, or child is harmed by crime, all citizens are touched by the devastating results; and,
WHEREAS, crime victims and their advocates over the past two decades have made unparalleled progress in securing rights for crime victims in the criminal justice system; and,
WHEREAS, crime victims and those who serve them are a significant force for positive changes that have resulted in improved victims' rights, services, and laws that truly promote justice for all; and,
WHEREAS, during 1998's National Crime Victims' Rights Week, the myriad good deeds and important work of crime victims and their advocates deserve our nation's recognition and respect; and,
WHEREAS, VictimNet is joining forces with victim service programs, criminal justice officials, and concerned citizens throughout Jackson County and the United States to observe National Crime Victims' Rights Week; and,
WHEREAS, during the week of April 19-25, 1998 and throughout the year, our community, large and small, urban and rural, join together to commemorate this year's theme, "Victims' Rights: Right for America"; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby designates the week of April 19-25, 1998, as Crime Victims' Rights Week, in Jackson County, Missouri.
