RESOLUTION # 12238, June 1, 1998

Body

WHEREAS, it was with great sorrow that family and friends learned of the death of Lou Schumacher, Sr; and,

WHEREAS, Mr. Schumacher received a degree in mechanical engineering from Oregon State University and served in the Army Corps of Engineers during World War II as a lieutenant, instructing heavy equipment operations; and,

WHEREAS, he moved to Kansas City in 1959 and became executive vice president of Dean Machinery Co., serving until his retirement in 1980; and,

WHEREAS, Mr. Schumacher was a lifetime member of the Soil Conservation Society of America and a member of the Kansas City Environmental Management Commission, Kansas City, Mo. Waste Minimization Commission, and Southern Communities Coalition; and,

WHEREAS, he has served on the board of the National Santa Fe Trail Association and the Oregon and California Trail Associations, founded Three Trails West, Inc., and devoted many hours to the study and history of the Santa Fe Trail; and,

WHEREAS, in 1966 he was the recipient of the Gold Award by the U.S. Department of Interior National Park Service for his valuable contributions to the Santa Fe Historical Trail; and,

WHEREAS, Mr. Schumacher was also concerned with and supported Consolidated School District #1, was given keys to the cities of Kansas City and St. Louis for his community involvement, and was a ballroom dancing competitor; and,

WHEREAS, he is survived by his wife Topper, sons Lou, Jr., Jim, and John, daughter Cindy, and four grandchildren; and,

WHEREAS, Mr. Schumacher will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him; now therefore,
