RESOLUTION # 12296, July 28, 1998

INTRODUCED BY Dan Tarwater, County Legislator

Body
WHEREAS, First Baptist Church of Grandview was organized at 1416 Main Street on July 10, 1848, with a membership of twelve and, in 1853 a stone church was built in the northern part of Grandview; and,

WHEREAS, in 1861 during the Civil War, the church stopped holding services but reconvened in 1865 after the end of the war; and,

WHEREAS, from 1891 until 1950 the church held services at the southwest corner of Grandview Road and Main Street and then moved to its present location at 15th and Main Streets; and,

WHEREAS, today the church's resident membership is 1,422 and total membership is 2,284; and,

WHEREAS, the church is proud of its connection with President Harry S. Truman and his mother, who were members of the church; and,

WHEREAS, First Baptist Church of Grandview celebrated the 150th anniversary of its founding on July 12, 1998, with a special service and picnic; and,

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature congratulates First Baptist Church of Grandview upon its 150th anniversary celebration.

Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
