Body
WHEREAS, the Jackson County Parks and Recreation Volunteer Service Program was established in 1988 when John Walsh, an experienced volunteer, "volunteered" to coordinate a department-wide program; and,
WHEREAS, countless hours of research and networking went into developing the Jackson County Parks and Recreation Volunteer Service Program; and,
WHEREAS, the Jackson County Parks and Recreation Volunteer Service Program has become so successful that it now employees a full-time coordinator and volunteer office staff to oversee it; and,
WHEREAS, today over 800 volunteers annually work side by side with department staff in implementing Jackson County Parks and Recreation programs and events; and,
WHEREAS, volunteers contribute over 25,000 hours of service annually in over 50 different program areas ranging from special recreation and day camp activities to youth sports, natural resources, and historic site interpretation; and,
WHEREAS, volunteers, including seniors, youth, families, and businesses, provide meaningful and caring services for all ages in our community from children to senior adult groups; and,
WHEREAS, just in the past calendar year 1999 alone, volunteer service hours contributed over Two Hundred Fifty Thousand Dollars worth of savings for the Jackson County Parks and Recreation Department and the citizens of Jackson County; and,
WHEREAS, on March 20, 2000, the National Association of Counties selected the Jackson County Parks and Recreation Volunteer Service Program as the winner of its first-ever "Acts of Caring Awards" Program for volunteerism; and,
