Body
WHEREAS, the Somali Foundation, Inc., of Kansas City assists East African refugees and other immigrants to adjust socially to the United States and live with economic security and good health by providing services, education, and advocacy while honoring their culture; and,
WHEREAS, Somalia gained its independence from Britain and Italy to form the Somali Republic on July 1, 1960; and
WHEREAS, the Somali Community in Kansas City will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Somalia Independence Day on July 1, 2010; and,
WHEREAS, there are approximately 5,000 Somalis living in the Kansas City area, most arriving as legal refugees and 65 percent with U.S. citizenship; and,
WHEREAS, the Somali Foundation provides healthcare programs, translation, and transportation services, as well as other assistance programs for women, youth, and all East African refugees; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature recognizes the Kansas City Somali Foundation and the Somali Community on the 50th anniversary of the Somali Independence and extends sincere gratitude for their efforts in the growth and development of strong relationships within the community.

Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
