Body
WHEREAS, on February 22, 2000, Jake Robel died as a result of a carjacking which occurred in front of Mr. Goodcents located near Hidden Valley Road and M-291 in Independence; and,
WHEREAS, leading up to this crime, Mr. Barela noted a man getting into a Chevy Blazer belonging to a woman who entered Mr. Goodcents; and,
WHEREAS, after advising the woman about the situation and noting that there was a child in the back seat, Mr. Barela attempted to stop the carjacking in progress; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Barela opened the door on the driver's side and made an attempt to remove the thief from the car; and,
WHEREAS, after a struggle, the thief drove away, knocking Mr. Barela backwards; therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature commends Nicholas Barela for his part in attempting to help the victim by trying to stop the carjacker from leaving the area.

Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
