Body
WHEREAS, the Hon. Mamie Currie Hughes served as a Jackson County legislator from
1972 through 1978 for the original 4th District and was the Vice-Chair of the Legislature in
1976; and,


WHEREAS, Mamie Hughes is a former public school teacher, an advocate for the elderly and citizens within the Bruce R. Watkins Drive corridor and throughout Jackson County, a vocal supporter of the African-American community, and the recipient of numerous community and national awards and honors; and,

WHEREAS, Ms. Hughes has served as an active member in many government and community boards and organizations including the NAACP, the Black Economic Union, the Central Exchange, Samuel U. Rodgers Community Health Center, Planned Parenthood of Kansas City, and the Mid-America Regional Council; and,

WHEREAS, Ms. Hughes' passionate crusade for the rights of others has led her to help citizens in the City's central core who struggle for decent housing, neighborhoods, medical care, health benefits, truth, justice and the American way of life for all Americans; and,

WHEREAS, Ms. Hughes is the mother of five children, three stepchildren and two grandchildren, and is the distinguished widow of the late Dr. Samuel U. Rodgers; and,

WHEREAS, Mamie Hughes was named "One of Kansas City's Legends" in the 35th Anniversary Edition of Ingrams in 2009; and,

WHEREAS, Mamie Hughes will be honored as the March 2010 recipient of the Extraordinary Women of Kansas City Award on March 19, 2010 at a reception in her honor from 5:00 p.m....
