Body
WHEREAS, the retirement of Virgil Smith, after forty years of service in the Independence Police Department, will be celebrated December 14, 2007; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Smith began his career in June of 1967 as a reserve police officer, earning the rank of sergeant in that position in 1972; and,
WHEREAS, in 1995, Mr. Smith became a part time detention officer, maintaining his duties as both a reserve police sergeant and part time detention officer for the remainder of his career; and,
WHEREAS, in 2000, he became a part-time city employee and was assigned as the security officer to the Municipal Court; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Smith has also worked at General Motors for thirty years, retiring in September 1989; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Smith always gets along well with everyone, and he has carried the reputation of being a "man of good report" with those he escorts to and from court; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby recognizes and congratulates Virgil Smith for his outstanding dedication and service to the Independence Police Department and Municipal Court throughout the years and extends best wishes for his future endeavors upon his retirement.

Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
