Body
WHEREAS, under current Jackson County property assessment policies and applicable state law, the deadline for filing property assessment appeals is set for July 14th of each tax year; and
WHEREAS, numerous property owners and business stakeholders have expressed concern regarding the limited time available to review assessment notices, gather supporting documentation, and submit formal appeals; and
WHEREAS, the Jackson County Legislature is committed to promoting transparency, equity, and due process in the property assessment and appeals process; and
WHEREAS, allowing additional time for property owners to prepare their appeals will enhance fairness without significantly impacting the County's ability to process appeals efficiently; now therefore,
BE IT ORDAINED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, as follows:
SECTION 1.
The deadline for filing real property assessment appeals in Jackson County shall be extended from July 14th to August 1st of each tax year, effective beginning with the 2025 assessment year.
SECTION 2.
The Assessment Department and Board of Equalization shall make all necessary administrative adjustments to implement the revised appeal deadline and ensure continued timely processing of appeals.
