Body
WHEREAS, the Jackson County Courthouse on the Square in Independence, MO, was built in 1933, under the supervision of then Presiding Judge of the County Court, and later President, Harry S. Truman; and,

WHEREAS, the courthouse is historically significant building, the anchor of the ongoing revitalization of the Independence Square, and has been recognized by inclusion on the National Register of Historical Places; and,

WHEREAS, the County has recently renovated and waterproofed the shell of the building and replaced the roof, in order to make it ready for further rehabilitation and restoration; and,

WHEREAS, the next step in the process is the restoration of the courthouse exterior grounds to their pre-1960s appearance; and,
WHEREAS, the estimated cost of this next phase of the project is $2 million; and,

WHEREAS, the County has committed $270,000 within its 2007 budget for this phase and is working with community leaders to explore ways to reduce costs and raise funds to cover the remaining costs; and,

WHEREAS, the Administration recommends that these funds be deposited with the Truman Heartland Foundation where they can be used as seed money for a community-wide fundraising effort for this project; and,
