Body
WHEREAS, Bill Baker is a lifelong resident of Independence, and has been a strong political activist in this area for most of his life; and,

WHEREAS, Bill served on the Independence City Council as an at-large member from 1978 to 1982 and as 4th District member since 1992, and acted as Mayor Pro-Tem for four years; and,

WHEREAS, Bill is a member of the Independence Chamber of Commerce and its Jackson County Expressway Coalition, the Kansas City Fire Brigade, the Missouri Sheriffs' Association, and the Missouri Democratic Party, a life member of the VFW Post 1000, Independence, and American Legion Post 21, and an associate member of the Fraternal Order of Police; and,

WHEREAS, although Bill is retiring, he still plans to continue to serve as president of the United Eastern Democrats, an organization he founded, and serve on the Jackson County Democratic Committee, an organization of which he has been a member for twenty years; and,

WHEREAS, twenty year's ago Bill's wife, Shirley, started the Courthouse Exchange Restaurant & Lounge on the Independence Square, a family business and gathering place for political activities, from which she has recently retired; and,

WHEREAS, Bill and Shirley have seven children, Robin, Michael, Monica, Tim, Cynthia, John, and Sara, and seventeen wonderful grandchildren; and,

WHEREAS, they plan to retire to an 85-acre farm near Stover, Missouri, and spend more time with their family; and,

WHEREAS, Bill has been a distinguished Jackson County civic and political leader, and appreciation goes out to him for his outstanding, unselfish career in politics and his many contributions to Jackson County; now therefore,
