A RESOLUTION recognizing Santa Fe Neighborhood upon the occasion of its 50th anniversary.

Body
WHEREAS, Santa Fe Neighborhood, a nationally historic neighborhood, provides tradition and heritage within the African-America community; and,
WHEREAS, the area was officially designed as Santa Fe Place Addition in 1897, having been named after the historic Santa Fe Trail which crossed its property; and,
WHEREAS, in the early 1950's the area became an affluent African-American community where families restored the homes of the area to their original beauty; and,
WHEREAS, because of the pride in their community and the desire to preserve its rich and unique history, residents of this unique neighborhood formed nine block clubs and later the Santa Fe Area Council was founded by Mr. Willard Shelton; and,
WHEREAS, by 1980 the neighborhood received government funding to erect historic markers, and in 1986 was placed on the National Register of Historic Places; and,
WHEREAS, also in 1986 Santa Fe Area Council was incorporated as a not-for-profit organization and within several years the Council developed a strategic economic and social development plan; and,
WHEREAS, efforts of the Santa Fe Council include the Linwood Shopping Center, Justin Place, Martin Luther King Hospital, Santa Fe Place, and the Lucille Bluford Branch Library; and,
WHEREAS, the Neighborhood takes great pride in the many programs and services it offers including crime prevention, housing rehabilitation, youth programs, business development, and social services in the community; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature congratulates Santa Fe Neighborhood upon its 50th anniversary in existence, and for the services and programs it provides to the communi...
