Body
WHEREAS, the Jackson County Legislature is proud to recognize Independence Meals on Wheels, Inc. for its 50 years of service to the Independence community; and,

WHEREAS, Independence Meals on Wheels, Inc. ("MOW") is a Missouri nonprofit corporation chartered on September 23, 1975, and;

WHEREAS, Independence MOW was founded by Church Women United of Independence under the leadership of Dorothy Evans, with support from the Ministerial Alliance and Chamber of Commerce; and,

WHEREAS, Meals on Wheels, Inc. was formed to serve nutritious hot meals Monday through Friday to Independence residents who are homebound, convalescent, handicapped, or elderly, meal recipients can order frozen weekend meals to be delivered on Friday; and,

WHEREAS, Meals on Wheels, Inc. started with meal delivery to 20 recipients who paid up to $2.00 per meal on a sliding scale based on income; today, Meals on Wheels, Inc. serves approximately 800 meals per week (approximately 160 per day) to recipients who pay up to $4.75 per meal; and,

WHEREAS, in its 50 years of service to the Independence community, hundreds of volunteer community members recruited from churches, civic groups, service organizations, and others who respond to the need have donated their time as drivers and Board members; and,

WHEREAS, in addition to receiving meals, recipients enjoy their daily visit from a friendly and caring driver who can check on their well-being and share a smile and a kind word, many recipients would not otherwise be able to remain in their homes without meal delivery service; now therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri that the Legislature hereby congratulates Independence Meals on...
